About Dean Baquet Not Having a College Degree

Could you get a job today at The New York Times without a college degree? The short answer is no.

Dean Baquet3In a profile about its new executive editor, The New York Times reported that Dean Baquet does not have a college degree. Baquet dropped out of Columbia University after his sophomore year after landing a summer internship at a local New Orleans newspaper that he parlayed into a full-time job. The revelation took many by surprise and prompted the question of whether a journalist could land a job at the Times without a college degree. That led to the following response from environmental writer, Roger Witherspoon, who gives an insightful historical perspective on news media and journalism education.

Roger WitherspoonThe short answer to the question is no, you can’t get a job now at the NYT — or virtually any other newsroom — without a college degree.

Back in the ’60s, journalism was viewed as a trade, and while there were journalism programs, graduating from one was not required. The Michigan Daily, the college paper at University of Michigan, for years had more alumni actually working as journalists than any institution except the journalism program at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Michigan did not underwrite its media. The radio station, WCBN, and the Daily paid salaries, earned revenue from advertising, and competed with the for profit-radio stations and newspapers in the Detroit area.

Most newspapers in those days had their own in-house training program. I went from NBC’s election unit to the The Bergen Record in ’68, and theirs was a six-week program. You didn’t start writing for the paper until the last week, and were assigned a beat after graduating. 

Time Magazine also had a training program, though most blacks had to first work in their reference department for several years before getting a chance at reporting. Newspapers back then were pretty much lily-white — I was the first at the Record — and it was another decade before the New York City newspapers dropped their separate and unequal pay scales.

There were two things that changed the common practices and view of journalism as a trade:

1. Barbara Walters got a contract for $1 million in the early ’70s. (My salary at NBC was $80/week.)

2. Watergate.

Walters’ contract had parents all over America suddenly looking at the news business — particularly TV — as a worthwhile career to pursue. Watergate made stars of WoodStein (reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein who shared a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of Watergate) and gave luster to investigative reporting.

As a result, colleges all over the country suddenly started Mass Communication programs, usually within their English departments. And the results were predictable: Students would be assigned a story and, when they didn’t turn it in on time, got three days to do a makeup. That works fine for English papers, but doesn’t do much to train an aspirant to handle deadlines. At Clark-Atlanta University, for example, Mass Comm was its second biggest department with some 400+ students. But generally, only about five of their graduates each year could actually land jobs in the media– even though their school had a television and radio station as training grounds. (Greg Morrison, Nolu Crockett-Ntonga, and Jane Tillman Irving would later overhaul the school’s broadcast training and faculty.)

In the ’80s, the Associated Press Managing Editors Association met with academic accrediting groups and worked out a deal: The APME would work with the accrediting body to set standards for journalism programs that would turn out actual reporters and, in return, the managing editors would only hire folks with journalism degrees or the equivalent experience. And that is pretty much the state of the art now.

I have no degree.

I majored in aeronautical engineering at Michigan and, in ’66, was the only black kid there. The KKK tried to kill me, an effort that left me permanently crippled and always armed. A Klansman ran me down while I was crossing the street. An ambulance came, but the medic said they didn’t pick up niggers, and I walked, on a broken hip, to a hospital that would not treat me.

Because of my hip I spent a lot of time in my room listening to the radio. One day I heard the announcer telling nigger jokes. So I walked down to the station, barged into the station manager’s office, and demanded an end to racism on the air. He asked me if I thought I could do better at delivering a half hour newscast than the guy who offended me. I said of course. And he said I’d start the next day. That’s my introduction to the news.

I decided I liked it and wanted to learn more. So I applied for a job at the The Michigan Daily, which paid a salary, and I worked at both media outlets. In April 1968 I covered the presidential primary election of George Romney — Mitt’s daddy — and found the experience of a presidential campaign electrifying and, in the long run, more interesting that building rockets.

I quit school the next day and drove back to New Jersey. It was a Thursday. That Monday, I walked into the NBC personnel office and said I’d like a job in the newsroom. I had just covered Romney’s campaign and wanted to do that for a living. The personnel director said they happened to have an opening in their election unit and if I wanted it, I could start Tuesday.

And I did.

But that was a half century ago.

I might get a job delivering newspapers today. But I wouldn’t be writing for one.

    Enjoyed the piece, Roger. However, I don’t recall any “training program” at Time during my tenure there (1970-87). Correspondent hires were expected to already have several years of experience. Researchers, most of whom had college degrees, some PhDs, were usually stuck in what most considered a dead end job. Only a select few became correspondents. But there was no training program other than what one learned in the course of his/her regular job. I too do not have a college degree, a status that I’m sure would keep me from being hired today by Time or The Wall Street Journal. But that’s ok. I doubt very much if I’d want to work at the current version of either.

      It’s always a pleasure to hear from you, Joe. I have fond memories of stringing for you in the 80s, when you were the SE bureau chief for Time.

      In 77, when I was an editor at the NY Daily News, I was invited to a luncheon with Time execs, who said they were interested in integrating the magazines and was I willing to recommend 6 writers who could enter a training program.

      These writers would actually be on probation for a year, while white reporters out of college would be o probation just 3 months.I asked if they really wanted to integrate their operation, why not hire blacks at all levels, not just trainees. The answer was they were not ready for full integration, and would proceed slowly. They said that with the notable exception of you and Jack White, blacks first had to work in research before getting a chance to become reporters.

      I provided the 6 nominees, whose were actually hired by the personnel department and loaned out to various magazines.Their experiences varied. I agree with your assessment — None had the type of formal training program that the Bergen Record provided, and the Washington Bureau was openly hostile to the new black reporter in their midst. It was on-the-job learning.

    I also enjoyed this. I am sorry that you were run down and had to endure discrimination from those that should have helped you when you most needed it. I can’t imagine having that experience myself or for those I care about or even a stranger. Unbelievable… I don’t know what else to say. Thanks for sharing.

    Nicely and quite accurately stated, Roger. Those double-standards always existed, even in the “Training Programs.” The one Jim Giggans, myself and a number of others “transitioned” through at ABC Network TV News in the late ’60s was ad hoc at best (and what you yourself personally dug in/dug out of it). But with pioneers like Mal Goode (first black national network TV Correspondent), John Fletcher (first black cameraman at any national TV Network) to encourage and guide us, we managed to stick it out and succeed. Glad you’re still “in the trenches” adding that much-needed accuracy and perspective.
