Actor André De Shields chatted with NBC-TV’s Janice Huff on News 4 New York about The Wiz earlier this week. De Shields, who created the title role in the original 1975 Broadway production of the landmark musical, also dished about his current role in the new Broadway musical, Gotta Dance.
NBC will recognize the upcoming 40th anniversary of The Wiz, which won seven Tony Awards including best musical, with an upcoming updated televised version of The Wiz Live! featuring an all-star cast that includes Queen Latifah as “The Wiz” as well as Common, Mary J. Blige, David Alan Grier, Ne-Yo, Stephanie Mills, Amber Riley (“Glee”) and Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”).
The live telecast airs December 3 at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
De Shields, who won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Achievement for his performance in the 1982 NBC broadcast of “Aint Misbehaving” credits “The Wiz” for making “The Great White Way,” also known as Broadway, more inclusive, but for also opening the door for all-black casts.
