Whether George Stephanopoulos is a journalist isn’t really the question we should be asking
Is ABC News This Week host and chief anchor George Stephanopoulos too close to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton? Carole Simpson, the first African American woman to anchor a major network newscast at ABC, says he is.
“There’s a coziness that George cannot escape the association. He was press secretary for President Clinton, that’s pretty close,” Simpson told CNN’s Brian Stelter. “And while he did try to separate himself from his political background to become a journalist, he really is not a journalist. Yet ABC has made him the face of ABC news. The chief anchor. And, I think they are really caught in a quandary here.”
Whether Stephanopoulos is a journalist isn’t really a question we, as journalists, should ponder. Regardless as to whether he is or isn’t, many viewers see him that way. The question is really about journalistic ethics and political contributions. Should a contribution to the Clinton Foundation be viewed as political, why or why not?
