Mainstream media finds Schilling too toxic because of his reputation as being racist, homophobic and transphobic — but he could end up on a new Breitbart-led Trump TV.
Former ESPN baseball analyst Curt Schilling, fired six months ago for posting racist and homophobic comments on social media, is joining alt-right media outlet Breitbart, according to New York Magazine.
The magazine reports that an official announcement could come today:
On Monday, Breitbart plans to announce that former Red Sox pitcher and Trump supporter Curt Schilling will begin hosting a daily online radio show featuring political commentary and calls from listeners. The broadcast will eventually include a video livestream. The show marks Schilling’s return to media six months after ESPN fired him for sharing an anti-transgender Facebook post with a message that read: “A man is a man no matter what they call themselves. I don’t care what they are, who they sleep with, men’s room was designed for the penis, women’s not so much. Now you need laws telling us differently? Pathetic.”
“He got kicked off ESPN for his conservative views. He’s a really talented broadcaster,” Breitbart editor-in-chief Alex Marlow said.
At ESPN Schilling quickly built a reputation for his divisive personality, even getting into it with coworkers. The New York Daily news reported He once said about ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith:
“What am I going to debate about? I have no interest,” Schilling said. “I’m 49 years old. I have had cancer, I’ve had a heart attack, I’m losing my hair. I’m not going to waste my time with people I don’t respect.”
“I don’t respect him. I think he’s a racist, I think he’s a bigot. There’s nothing to debate.”
The New York Times reported about Schilling’s forced departure from ESPN:
Schilling, who had worked for the network since 2010 and most recently offered analysis on “Monday Night Baseball,” was dismissed after sharing a Facebook that appeared to respond to the North Carolina law that bars transgender people from using bathrooms and locker rooms that do not correspond with their birth genders.
The post showed an overweight man wearing a wig and women’s clothing with parts of the T-shirt cut out to expose his breasts. It says: “LET HIM IN! to the restroom with your daughter or else you’re a narrow-minded, judgmental, unloving racist bigot who needs to die.”
